"Surrender" is a Cheap Trick song originally released on January 30, 1978 on the album Heaven Tonight. It is also featured on the live album At Budokan. It is a late 1970s teen anthem, describing the relations between the baby boomer narrator and his G.I. generation parents. The narrator describes how his parents are weirder and hipper than many children would believe. For example, the narrator describes how he discovers his parents "rolling on the couch" and listening to his Kiss records late at night.[1] It is ranked #465 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Cheap Trick still performs this song, and Rick Nielsen often actually throws vinyl Kiss records to the audience in live performances at the moment Kiss is mentioned in the song.
Less Than Jake included a cover of the song as a bonus track on the U.S. versions of Anthem. The distinction of it being a bonus track, along with the band's own "no covers" rule, kept it from being performed the two times the band performed Anthem in its entirety in Orlando and London. The song artwork (made by Jason Miracle) had no name and was included on the album artwork. It was either intended for this song or A.S.A.O.K.
Lyrics[]
Mother told me, yes, she told me
I'd meet girls like you
she also told me, stay away
you'll never know what you'll catch
just the other day I heard a soldier falling off
some Indonesian junk that's going round
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
surrender, surrender
but don't give yourself away
Ay, Ay!
Father says, your mother's right
she's really up on things
Before we married, Mommy served
in the WACS in the Philippines
now I heard the WACS recruited
old maids for the war
but mommy isn't one of those
I've known her all these years
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
surrender, surrender
but don't give yourself away
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
surrender, surrender
but don't give yourself away
Ay, hey!
Whatever happened to all this season's
losers of the year
every time I got to thinking
where'd they disappear
when I woke up, Mom and Dad
are rolling on the couch
rolling numbers, rock and rolling
got my KISS records out
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
surrender, surrender
but don't give yourself away
Ay, hey!
Away, away
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
surrender, surrender
but don't give yourself away
Ay, ay!
